Globetrotters on British Airways are enjoying fine wines from family-owned Barossa Valley winemaker Rosenvale Wines during the run-up to Christmas.
Rosenvale Wines of Nuriootpa has delivered a significant order to the airline with its Rosenvale 2004 Reserve Shiraz for First Class passengers and Rosenvale 2006 Estate Semillon for Economy travellers.
Rosenvale Wines is a family business of the Rosenzweig family that makes and markets wine sourced from their Estate vineyards in the Barossa Valley, dating back to 1935.
The family has prime vineyard land in the northern Barossa which is managed under a Quality Assured grape-growing program and committed to production of super premium fruit. The majority of the fruit produced is sold to other winemakers, but the family retains a small amount of selected fruit to produce their very personal ‘Rosenvale’ label.
The Rosenvale Vineyards story began in the European province of Prussia in 1850 when Gottfried and Johanna Rosenzweig immigrated to Australia fleeing a life of poverty, revolution and wars. They settled in the small Barossa Valley village of Moculta in 1858.
Their offspring, James and Sahar Rosenzweig, now manage the day-to-day operations of Rosenvale, along with a small team of dedicated staff.
The winery uses a ‘minimal interference’ approach to winemaking with open top vats for fermenting and a basket press to keep some of the traditional winemaking activities alive as they play an important part of the ‘human element’ of the family’s wine culture. Rosenvale was rated a ‘5 Star Winery’ by James Halliday, in his 2008 Wine Companion book.
“Gottfried and Johanna’s vision was a better life for their family, and our vineyards and winery show the commitment to continue that dream for future generations,” says James.
Doing business with British Airways…
So how does a small family winery deal with a multinational airline? James said business with BA had been a positive experience with organised, helpful people and good guidelines.
“Rosenvale was asked to submit wines to a specialist tasting panel after one of our wines was discovered at a restaurant by a supplier to British Airways. I believe that limited tenders are offered for supplying wines and any wine selected must pass an expert tasting panel.
“They are a great business partner and I found we share similar business ethics. I like to conduct business in a win-win environment for all companies in the supply chain. This reflects a pride in family values and a respect that our founders would have expected.”
In Australia, Rosenvale has limited distribution and seeks out speciality bottle shops and restaurants with customers wanting to experience ‘a change’ to corporate styled wines.
The Company is exporting into several key European countries. It has existing links in the Asian market with a small presence in the USA and Canada.
